What will my role be?

A formsetter and/or heavy civil carpenter is responsible for building, assembling, and dismantling concrete formwork for large-scale infrastructure projects such as bridges, culverts, retaining walls, water control structures, and roadways. They ensure that forms are constructed to exact specifications, safely and efficiently, to facilitate proper placement and finishing of concrete.

As a Formsetter and/or Heavy Civil Carpenter, you will:

  • Read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine formwork design, dimensions, and layout.
  • Measure, cut, assemble, and erect wooden, metal, or modular formwork systems to shape concrete structures to the required dimensions and tolerances.
  • Set forms to the correct line, grade, and elevation using levels, lasers, and stringlines.
  • Install form ties, bracing, and supports to maintain the structural integrity of forms during concrete placement.
  • Apply form release agents and ensure all forms are properly prepared for pouring.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain forms, shoring, and falsework to ensure they are safe and reusable.
  • Strip and dismantle forms after concrete has cured, and clean and stack materials for future use.
  • Coordinate with reinforcing, placing, and finishing crews to ensure seamless operations.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations, wear appropriate PPE, and ensure that formwork is erected and removed safely.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in good condition and organized for efficiency.

What we’re looking for!

Are you a collaborative and driven individual with:

  • Strong knowledge of formwork systems, carpentry techniques, and materials
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and accurately transfer information to the field.
  • Proficiency in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, and formwork equipment.
  • Physical strength, stamina, and attention to detail to work on demanding construction sites.
  • Team-oriented, safety-conscious, and capable of solving on-site challenges quickly and effectively.

Assets that will set you apart are:

  • Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s license: Allows you to travel independently between job sites—an important factor as many projects span multiple locations across the region.
  • Minimum 2 years experience within the heavy civil construction sector: Hands-on experience in concrete infrastructure projects (bridges, retaining walls, culverts, etc.) demonstrates your ability to work effectively in fast-paced, safety-sensitive environments.
  • Willingness to extend hours, when necessary: A flexible approach to scheduling ensures project deadlines are met and shows your dedication to getting the job done right—especially during critical phases like pours or formwork stripping.
  • Proficiency in specialty formwork, including EFCO Form systems and various shoring systems: Familiarity with modular and specialty formwork systems like EFCO, Peri, and Symons allows for quicker setup, better quality control, and safer operations—making you an immediate asset to any crew.
  • Training and Certifications in Working at Heights, Fall Protection, WHMIS and Elevated Work Platforms: These credentials not only enhance worksite safety but also reflect your commitment to best practices and continuous learning.
  • Strong Understanding of Concrete Behaviour and Pour Sequencing: Carpenters who understand how concrete behaves—particularly during placement and curing—can build better forms and anticipate issues before they arise, leading to higher quality outcomes.
