What will my role be?

A cement finisher is responsible for placing, finishing, protecting, and repairing concrete on large-scale infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, retaining walls, and water control structures. Working closely with formwork and placing crews, the cement finisher ensures that all concrete surfaces meet specified grades, textures, and tolerances.

As a Cement Finisher, you will:

  • Place, spread, level, and finish freshly poured concrete using hand tools, screeds, power trowels, floats, and straightedges.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, elevations, and specifications to ensure proper thickness, slope, and surface finish of concrete structures.
  • Apply curing agents, sealers, or surface treatments to protect and enhance concrete finishes.
  • Create surface textures and finishes as specified, such as broom, trowel, exposed aggregate, or decorative patterns.
  • Check forms, subgrades, and reinforcement for compliance with design before pouring.
  • Repair and patch damaged or defective concrete surfaces to meet quality standards.
  • Use straightedges, laser levels, or grade rods to verify elevations and maintain tolerances.
  • Clean and maintain tools, equipment, and work areas, ensuring readiness for daily operations.
  • Work collaboratively with other trades, formwork crews, and supervisors to maintain project schedule and quality.
  • Adhere to all site safety regulations, including wearing appropriate PPE and practicing safe work procedures.

Are you a collaborative and driven individual with:

  • In-depth knowledge of concrete properties, curing times, and finishing techniques.
  • Proficiency with hand tools and power finishing equipment.
  • Ability to achieve precise grades, slopes, and surface finishes as specified.
  • Physical strength and stamina to work on demanding sites and in various weather conditions.
  • Good communication skills, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety and quality.
  • Work collaboratively with other trades, formwork crews, and supervisors to maintain project schedule and quality.
  • Adhere to all site safety regulations, including wearing appropriate PPE and practicing safe work procedures.

Assets that will set you apart are:

  • Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s license: Being able to commute independently to various job sites across the region gives you more flexibility and reliability—qualities we value highly on our team.
  • Minimum 2 years experience within the heavy civil construction sector: Prior experience in roadwork, bridge building, grading, or concrete infrastructure provides a solid foundation and demonstrates your ability to work in demanding, real-world construction environments.
  • Willingness to extend hours, when necessary: Our projects sometimes require long days, early mornings, or tight turnarounds. A can-do attitude and commitment to project timelines is a key trait we look for.
  • Experience with Laser Levels and Concrete Finishing Equipment: Comfort with layout tools, screeds, and power trowels shows that you’re ready to hit the ground running with minimal onboarding.
  • Commitment to Continuous Learning: Whether it’s staying up to date on new finishing techniques or learning advanced surface treatments, a willingness to grow your skills is a major asset.
  • Certifications in WHMIS, Working at Heights, or Concrete-Related Training: Additional safety or technical training not only improves job site safety—it signals professionalism and initiative.
