Job Description

Qualifications & Experience:
• Ability to use survey instruments to establish correct line and grade for construction and road building projects
• Experience using total stations and GPS ( TOPCON) equipment would be an asset
• Ability to thoroughly read, understand and interpret civil construction plans and drawings
• Ability to identify any conflicts that may arise and report to the site supervisor
• Mathematically inclined to accurately calculate or extrapolate finished elevations
• Ability to work with the engineer and the surveyor to solve problems
• Ability to achieve correct grade by directing operators of equipment to adjust grade by moving earth, gravel, and other materials
• Ability to measure distances from reference points or offsets to accurately install utilities
• Ability to verify curvature of graded surface area using a hand level
• Ability to work under pressure in some situations
• Must be able to meet all safety requirements and applicable safety policies
• Must have a valid class 5 driver’s licence
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the project superintendent and/or the crew foreman, the grade man is an integral part of the crew. The grade man establishes construction line and grade for all utilities based on the stake layout provided by the surveyor. The grade man must be able to install offsets if required and transfer layout information to offset stakes.
The grade man must be able to clearly communicate with all members of the crew to ensure that all utilities are installed in their correct location. The grade man is also responsible to accurately record all as built information into their field book, and transfer the information onto the project record drawings.
