What will my role be?
A pipelayer is responsible for the installation of underground utility pipelines, including storm, sanitary, water, and other infrastructure systems, in accordance with project plans and specifications. Working as part of a team under the supervision of a foreman, the pipelayer ensures proper alignment, grade, and joint integrity of all installed pipes.
As a Pipelayer, you will:
- Install various types of underground piping (i.e. PVC, HDPE, concrete, steel) for water, sewer, storm drainage, and other utilities as specified.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, grade sheets, and specifications to determine pipe type, size, line, grade, and placement.
- Excavate, prepare, and fine-grade trenches and bedding materials to the correct depth, slope, and width, ensuring a stable base for pipe installation.
- Align and position pipes in trenches using levels, lasers, or grade rods to meet line and grade tolerances.
- Connect pipes and fittings securely, ensuring proper seals, gaskets, and jointing methods are used to maintain watertight systems.
- Backfill and compact trenches in layers to prevent settlement and protect installed utilities.
- Work closely with equipment operators, grade crews, and inspectors to maintain quality and productivity.
- Inspect and verify the integrity of installed pipelines before backfilling.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and assist with site preparation and restoration as required.
- Follow all safety guidelines and wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) while working in trenches and around heavy equipment.

What we’re looking for!
Are you a collaborative and driven individual with:
- Solid understanding of pipe types, jointing techniques, and installation procedures in heavy civil construction.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and grade stakes.
- Experience using lasers, levels, and other layout equipment to achieve accurate line and grade.
- Physical stamina to perform strenuous work in varying weather and site conditions.
- Team-oriented attitude with good communication skills and a strong commitment to safety
Assets that will set you apart are:
- Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s license: Having reliable transportation to access job sites—many of which are in evolving or remote locations—is essential for punctuality and project flow.
- Minimum 2 years experience within the heavy civil construction sector: Hands-on experience installing storm, sanitary, and water infrastructure under tight tolerances and changing site conditions demonstrates job-readiness and confidence working in deep trenches and confined spaces.
- Experience Working Around Live Utilities and Complex Tie-ins: Knowledge of safe excavation near live services or connections to existing infrastructure is a significant advantage on municipal and infrastructure contracts.
- Proficiency with Lasers, Levels, and Layout Tools: Operators and supervisors rely on accurate layout. Pipelayers with a sharp eye for line, grade, and elevation ensure smoother installations and reduce costly rework.
- Ability to Interpret and Execute Plans with Minimal Supervision: Understanding drawings, pipe bedding requirements, and proper backfill procedures shows initiative and supports a productive, safety-conscious worksite.
- Training and Certifications in Confined Space Entry, Trench Safety, and WHMIS: These credentials reinforce your commitment to personal and crew safety—particularly important when working in deep excavations and around heavy equipment.
- Willingness to extend hours, when necessary: Certain phases, like connections, testing, or shutdowns, may require evening or weekend work. Flexibility helps keep critical milestones on track.
